5 Steps for Creating Clean City Parks

City parks offer a great way to enjoy time outdoors and to spend time with family and friends. Unfortunately, the joy of spending time at a park can be negatively impacted when people fail to keep the park clean and safe for everyone to enjoy. As a park manager, there are several steps that can be taken to help keep the park looking great for everyone.

Step #1: Make Good Use of Recycling and Trash Receptacles

Perhaps the most important step to take toward keeping a park clean is to provide ample recycling and trash receptacles throughout the park. More receptacles should be placed near the areas where people are the most likely to congregate or to generate trash. Pavilions, concession stands and any other places where food will be served are particularly important areas for trash and recycling bins.

Step #2: Implement and Enforce Fines

Once the receptacles are in place, you can post signs throughout the park that encourage patrons to throw away their trash. Signs such as “Please Help Keep Our Park Clean” can serve as gentle reminders. To take it a step further, consider adding reminders that littering in the park is against the law and is punishable by fine. Of course, punishing by fine will do little to deter litterers if these fines are not enforced. Working closely with law enforcement to actively cite offenders will go a long way toward keeping your park clean.

Step #3: Maintain Staffing

Maintaining ample staffing is obviously something that is dependent upon your park’s budget. If possible, however, you should ensure the park is properly staffed with a regular cleaning schedule. In addition to emptying out trash and recycling receptacles, staff should be responsible for picking up trash that has not bee properly placed in a trash bin. Keeping the park clean should be a top priority for all staff members.

Step #4: Enlist in the Help of the Community

Getting the community involved with keeping the park clean is a great way to build civic pride while also keeping your facilities looking great. Contact volunteer groups to see if they would be willing to come to the park to clean on occasion. Hosting a “beautification day” is a great way to get volunteers to the park to help keep it looking great. You might even find a way to turn the effort into a competition with prizes given to those groups that collect the most trash.

Step #5: Prohibit Alcohol and Smoking

Cigarette butts and alcohol containers can become a serious problem in some parks. To help reduce the potential for litter, consider prohibiting both cigarettes and alcohol in your park. If making the park alcohol and cigarette-free is not possible, consider creating a designated section for alcohol and cigarettes and placing many trash receptacles in the area.

While taking these five steps does not guarantee a trash-free park, it will significantly reduce the amount of garbage cluttering the beauty and recreational opportunities your park has to offer.

Tips for an Eco-Friendly Halloween

With Halloween right around the corner, you may be feeling quite excited about the upcoming parties, costumes and treats. While Halloween is certainly a very fun time of the year, it also has the potential for creating a whole lot of unnecessary waste that can be easily avoided with a little forethought and planning. Here are some ways to get into the Halloween spirit while still doing your part to keep the planet clean.

Tip #1: Use Eco-Friendly Candy Collectors

Rather than purchase a plastic candy container that will likely be thrown away after the holiday is over, consider using a pillowcase instead. A pillowcase can be easily washed and put back to its original use after the trick-or-treating is over. It is also capable of holding plenty of candy and is not likely to break or form a hole while walking from house to house.

If you don’t want to risk ruining a pillowcase or if a pillowcase seems to cumbersome for your child, you can make your own candy container by cutting the top off of a milk jug and decorating it before heading out for trick-or-treating. With the help of a permanent marker and a little creativity, you can transform your milk jug into a jack-o-lantern or a friendly ghost. After trick-or-treating is over, you can put your milk jug in your recycling container along with all of your other recyclables.

Tip #2: Make Your Own Costume

Halloween costumes are often made of cheap material and are worn only once. Rather than spend the money on something that you will just throw away at the end of the day, consider creating your own costume from items that you already have at home. This is also a great way to create a unique costume that others are not likely to have. For example, you can transform yourself into a jellyfish by attaching strips of bubble wrap to the outside of an umbrella and carrying it over your head. Or, use cardboard boxes to transform yourself into a robot or even a sand castle.

Tip #3: Create Decorations from Trash

You might be surprised by the great decorations that you can create from items that you would otherwise throw away. Jars from spaghetti sauce, pickles and other food items can be cleaned out and painted with Halloween décor. Add a candle inside to create a spooky glow. Creating your decorations beforehand can be a fun family activity that adds a personal touch to your holiday.

Tip #4: Recycle Candy Wrappers

Rather than throw away all of the candy wrappers from Halloween, challenge the family to save them. Once all of the candy is consumed, look into programs such as Terracycle to recycle your wrappers rather than send them to the landfill. Or, if you are feeling extra creative, look for ways to use your wrappers to create something new.

At Securr, we offer a number of different receptacles that are meant for recycling. Whether you need smaller receptacles or large multistream recycle bins, we are sure to have an option for you.

Simple Ways to Help Fight Climate Change: Part 2

As part of this two-part series exploring ways that you can help prevent climate change, we have mostly explored steps that you can take at home. In this second part, we will explore how to help outside of your home and within your community.

Explore Alternative Transportation Options

Finding ways to leave your car at home when going to work or running errands can significantly reduce your carbon footprint. Walking whenever possible is the cleanest option. In addition, you will enjoy many health benefits with this simply option! Riding your bicycle is another option that is becoming increasingly easier to do with many communities adding bike lanes and paths for residents to enjoy.

If walking, riding a bike or using public transportation is not an option, you can still keep your waste down by properly maintaining your vehicle. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that you can improve your gas mileage by an average of 0.6 percent by ensuring your tires are properly inflated. In some cases, you can improve gas mileage by as much as three percent. A loose, cracked or damaged gas cap will also allow gas to escape from your tank as vapor, so be sure your gas cap is in good shape and always turn it until it clicks a few times to ensure it is properly in place.

Take Your Own Shopping Bags

Plastic bags take hundreds of years to break down, during which time they are contaminating soil and waterways. In addition, plastic bags require a significant amount of energy to produce. To help reduce the number of plastic bags that are used throughout the country, consider taking your own shopping bags when you go shopping.

Plant a Tree

Whether on your property or in a community lot, look for ways to add more trees to the area around you. Not only do trades offer shade and a peaceful place to rest, but they also help to clean the air while putting more oxygen back into it. Explore your community and look for other places where you can add more trees and create greenspace for community members to enjoy while also helping to reduce the carbon footprint of your neighborhood.

Start Recycling Programs

If your community does not have a recycling program, talk to your legislators about getting one started. If a recycling program is in place, look for ways to get more residents to participate. You can do this in part by simplifying the process of collecting recyclables and making it an important part of your community. One way to accomplish this goal is to install Securr recycling receptacles in city parks, on the street and businesses. With the option to place logos on the bins, you can seek out business partners to serve as sponsors to help pay for the bins and their collection in exchange for the advertisement the bins can provide for their business.

Simples Ways to Help Fight Climate Change: Part 1

Taking steps to protect the environment is an important part of ensuring the Earth continues to a place to sustain life for thousands of years to come. As part of this two-part series, you will learn more about how you can help fight climate change as well as how Securr can help with that fight.

Get a Home Energy Audit

Conducting a home energy audit will help you learn more about how much energy you use in your home while also providing you with tips for reducing your energy consumption. Most homeowners cut their energy bills by anywhere from 5 to 50 percent after having a home energy audit conducted.

Use Clean Energy Options

Adding solar panels to your home is an excellent way to reduce your fossil fuel consumption. A growing number of solar panel options specifically designed for residential use are becoming available, including color panels that can be placed on your roof. You can also ask your utility company about buying clean electricity, as some offer clean alternatives to their customers. While you may have to pay slightly more for this electricity, you can significantly reduce your carbon footprint while also helping to drive up the demand for alternative sources of energy.

Replace Your Lightbulbs

Replacing your lightbulbs with quality LED bulbs can significantly reduce the amount of energy you use while also extending the life of your bulbs. In fact, LED bulbs can last 25 times longer and use 75 percent less energy than other bulbs.

Make Smart Heating and Air Choices

A dirty filter in your HVAC system will make it work harder, thereby wasting energy. To prevent this energy loss, replace or clean your filters every three months. You can save additional energy by using a programmable thermostat. With a programmable thermostat, you can set your thermostat so it goes to a lower temperature during the winter or to a higher temperature during the summer when you are not home or when you are asleep.

Upcycle and Recycle Whenever Possible

Upcycling and recycling helps to reduce energy waste by eliminating the need to create new products. Of course, it also eliminates the amount of waste in landfills, thereby further helping to keep the Earth clean. There are many resources online with great ideas for upcycling projects, including those that involve making fun and interesting furniture from items that you would normally throw away. You can also recycle items other than plastics, papers and glass. For example, some retailers have recycling programs available for recycling clothing. With the average American throwing away almost 80 pounds of clothing per year, you can reduce your waste while also helping others when you choose to recycle your clothing instead.

To make recycling easier, Securr offers a number or bins and containers that are specifically designed for use with recycling programs. We also have clothing collection bins that can make it easier for you to collect and recycle clothing. From recycling containers with single slots to those with multiple slots to easily sort your recyclable materials, our bins come in a variety of different sizes and shapes that can be customized to meet your needs.

Implement a Recycling Program at Your Business with the Help of Securr

Establishing a recycling program at your place of business is an essential part of being a responsible business owner. Not only does it demonstrate responsibility in terms of protecting and preserving the environment, but it also serves as a positive role model to your employers and your customers. By encouraging your employees and customers to participate in a recycling program, you reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfills while also spreading an important message: recycling matters.

Implementing a Recycling Program at Your Workplace

Implementing a recycling program at your workplace is easier than you might realize. First, you need to obtain the proper receptacles to assist with the recycling process. You might be surprised to learn that there are many different types of recycling receptacles available from which to choose. Standalone recycling cans are designed to hold recyclables, while a multistream receptacle has separate areas designed for specific recyclable items or trash. With a standalone recycling receptacle, you will need to take it upon yourself to separate the glasses, plastics and other recyclable items. With a multistream receptacle, on the other hand, your employees and customers help with the separation process by tossing the appropriate item in the designated area.

At Securr, we are pleased to offer a number of multistream recycling bins from which to choose. If you simply want to collect waste and recycling in one can, we have double trash and recycling bins available. If you wish to break your trash and recycling down further, we have three-input and four-input varieties available. The bins are even available with lettering and other designations helping people to identify that the bin is to be used for recycling and the type of items that are to be placed in each input.

Enjoying the Benefits of Recycling

In addition to doing your part to protect the planet, implementing a recycling program at your business is a smart business decision. By doing so, you will be compliant with waste regulations while also being better prepared for potential future legislation. It can also help you to save money on your waste, as it is possible to enjoy a new income stream for your business by taking advantage of the rebates that are available for good quality cardboard, paper, plastics and other materials.

Of course, in order to fully enjoy these benefits, you will need to train your staff on the use of the equipment and teach them which types of items can be recycled. Contacting a waste management company to assist with this process can be helpful, as the company will help you with educating your workers while also forging a contract with you that allows for the prompt removal of all of your waste and recycling.  By working in cooperation with Securr, you can select the right receptacle to accommodate your needs while also choosing a design and a color that is well-suited to your business. In this way, you can enjoy the benefits of recycling while also keeping your business looking and running just the way you like.

What You Need to Know About Recycling Plastic

When it comes to recycling plastics, you may be wondering why some plastics can be recycled and others cannot. The reality is that even some containers containing the recycling symbol on the bottom will not actually be recycled, despite the fact that they are technically recyclable. This is because that symbol is actually a resin identification code, which is used to help sort the different types of plastics. If there is no demand for that particular type of plastic, however, it is not likely to be recycled. In fact, there are a variety of reasons why some plastic items may not be eligible for recycling. Here are some of the reasons why some containers will be recycled while other will not.

Considering the Demand

Most Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) sort plastic containers according to the identification code. This is done to ensure the items are placed in the proper bin with other containers with the same resin. In short, the first thing that is used to determine whether or not the container will be recycled is the type of resin that it is made from. The shape of the container is also considered when determining recyclability. This is because both of these factors affect whether or not there is a market demand for that particular product. If there is no demand for that particular type of recycled product, it will be disposed of in another way.

Preparing Recyclable Goods

Once the plastics have been sorted, the MRF bales the materials to sell. The MRF can command a higher price for the bales depending upon the quality of the product. “Quality” is determined by the purity. In other words, the more consistently it contains only one kind of resin, the more valuable it is. This means the MRF wants to take whatever steps necessary to ensure there is as little contamination in the product as possible. At the same time, they want to invest as little time as possible in the actual process of sorting the plactics. Since the products are typically hand sorted and because the MRF wants to use its employees and time as efficiently as possible, certain products may be tossed without a great deal of inspection to determine the identification code.

Water bottles and clear narrow-neck bottles used for soda are almost always made from PETE, which is the most commonly requested plactic material, so those items are likely to be kept and baled. Most MRFs will not keep odd-shaped containers, such as those that hold spinach and mixed greens, because there are many similarly-shaped products that are not made from PETE and inspecting each of these containers is too time consuming.

Since the ultimate recyclability of plastics is based on market demand for recycled products made from that particular type of plastic, you can help increase the amount of plastic this is recycled by purchasing products made from recycled plastics. The greater the demand for a wider variety of recycled plastic products, the more incentive MRFs have to invest in more effective sorting equipment and to bale all types of plastics.

SECURR Expands the Popular Flex Series Line, Offering Even More Customizable Options

Securr Flex Series

What do you think about when you think about trash cans? Silly question, right? Trash cans are places to put garbage, recyclables, and other waste – everybody knows that. But did you know that trash cans have the potential to be so much more?

That’s where Securr comes in. Securr is the leading manufacturer of custom waste receptacles and recycling containers in the US. Securr has the ability to custom create and produce trash cans that not only are flexible, durable, attractive and affordable, but can also promote your organization or company and even add a revenue stream. That’s a lot of muscle for just one can!

Now Securr is making it even easier to design and manufacture waste receptacles that will meet and exceed your expectations through the expansion of the Flex Series line of trash cans. This line is so popular that it’s making appearances at some of the nation’s most high-profile venues. Soon an even wider range of receptacles will be available to meet every need. Steve Thompson, Director of Marketing and Sales at Securr, recently shared details about this exciting development.

Q:  It must be rather thrilling to know that the Flex Series line of waste receptacles that were custom-designed and manufactured for Levi’s Stadium will be part of Super Bowl 50, to be held in San Francisco in 2016. What makes these trash cans tough enough to withstand the high traffic and exuberant fans that they’re sure to encounter during one of the most-watched sporting events of the year?

A:  The Flex Series receptacles are perfect for outdoor stadium environments because of their corrosion resistant materials and finishes. We only use galvaneeled steel, which has the same anti-corrosion properties as hot dip galvanizing and will last for many years in any environment. All other hardware and components are stainless steel or zinc plated. The powder coating is UV resistant and very durable.

Q: I see that the Securr Flex Series currently offers customizable square and rectangular units in both 36-gallon and 50-gallon sizes. Are there plans in the works for any other shapes and sizes for this popular line?

A:  We will offer the Flex Series models in single, double and triple configurations. Each is fully customizable to the taste of the individual buyer. The decorative hole patterns in the cabinet, the powder coat colors and the top colors are just some of the options that will be available.

Q:  Other teams have taken notice of these durable yet attractive waste bins. The San Jose Earthquakes just ordered a version for their new stadium in Silicon Valley (36-gallon double bin). Why do you think so many organizations have chosen to use and customize this line for their facilities?

A:  These receptacles are highly customizable. Teams need these options for logos and sponsors alike. We have several options for placing logos and designs on the receptacles: removable vinyl wrapped panels, vinyl decals or digital graphics. Stadiums and arenas have their own color themes and it’s our challenge to match the specified architectural requirements.

Q:  Securr sets itself apart from the competition by both designing and manufacturing trash cans in your facility in Southern California. How does that allow you to innovate and offer higher quality products at lower prices?

A:  Fortunately for our customers, when you buy from Securr, you buy directly from the manufacturer. We have complete control of the process and more importantly, a direct line to customers to better understand their needs. There is no dealer in the middle, so there is no mark-up and there is never anything lost in translation. Another benefit of working directly with the customers is the feedback that we value so much. Our product lines are in a constant state of improvement. Those suggestions more often than not come from our customer base. We’re very good listeners.

Q:  What is the best way for businesses to get in touch with you to discuss their waste receptacle needs?

A:  We enjoy talking directly to people and listen carefully to what they say. Many times, we can help them by suggesting certain products based on how they’re going to be used. So, feel free to give us a call anytime at 1-888-671-7066 or explore our website at www.trash-cans.com to see the hundreds of available options.
